Melt Method FAQs

What is MELT?

The MELT Method® (MELT®) is a simple self-treatment technique that reduces chronic pain and helps you stay healthy, youthful, and active for a lifetime. Just 10 minutes of MELT three times a week can reduce the effects of accumulated tension and stress caused by daily living.

This approach is backed by science and embraced by hundreds of thousands of MELTers. A balanced nervous system and healthy connective tissue work together to provide architectural support and optimal mind–body communication.

New York City–based manual therapist and connective tissue specialist Sue Hitzmann transformed neurofascial science and hands-on therapies into MELT. Using specialized techniques, a soft body roller, and four small balls, MELT rehydrates connective tissue, rebalances the nervous system, and restores space to compressed joints. In her New York Times bestselling book The MELT Method, now in eight languages, Hitzmann has brought this self-treatment to more than 200,000 people worldwide.

How does MELT work?

Daily living creates physical, emotional, mental, and environmental stress. Repetition causes “stuck stress” to accumulate and dehydrate connective tissue, interfering with nervous system regulation and slowing the body’s natural healing process.

This can lead to aches, stiffness, neck and low-back pain, headaches, insomnia, digestive problems, injury, and accelerated aging. When connective tissue is hydrated and free of stuck stress, your body functions more efficiently and healing occurs daily.

MELT directly addresses stuck stress by rehydrating connective tissue and rebalancing the nervous system—something other approaches (nutrition, exercise, meditation) don’t directly do.

What benefits does MELT offer?

Many people see and feel results in the first session. Over time, MELT heightens the body’s ability to repair and heal itself, creating lasting change.

MELT improves:

  • Flexibility
  • Alignment & posture
  • Results of exercise
  • Joint mobility
  • Sleep & digestion
  • Overall well-being

MELT reduces:

  • Aches & pains
  • Wrinkles
  • Cellulite
  • Tension & stress
  • Headaches
  • Risk of injury

Who is MELT for?

MELT is for anyone who wants to slow aging and live pain-free. It’s ideal for people in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond who wish to stay active, mobile, and independent, and for younger adults and athletes seeking optimal performance without wear and tear. Even if you’re pregnant,
injured, post-surgery, overweight, sedentary, out of shape, or have limited mobility, chronic pain, joint replacements, or bone disorders—you can still MELT. It’s the best starting point for any exercise or wellness program.

Why should I MELT?

MELT quickly rehydrates connective tissue and helps release long-held tension and stress that leads to chronic pain. It’s easy to learn and provides results you can see and feel the first time. Alignment, flexibility, energy, mood, and performance often improve within a few sessions, and your body feels good long after you MELT. Become your own Hands-off Bodyworker® and take control of your health.

How often should I MELT?

MELT is gentle enough to do daily, yet just 10 minutes three times a week can deliver immediate and lasting benefits. Drink a glass of water before and after to maximize results.

For workouts: MELT before strength training to improve muscle performance and joint alignment, or after cardio to erase compression and stiffness and enhance recovery. People who MELT regularly often feel more energized and motivated to move.

Is MELT like myofascial release, yoga, Pilates®, reflexology, or PT?

MELT complements other treatments and practices but is unique in directly addressing the neurofascial system (nervous + connective tissue). It’s to the neurofascial system what exercise and rehab are to the musculoskeletal system. Adding MELT can amplify the results of whatever
else you’re doing.

Has MELT been reviewed by experts?

Yes. MELT has been reviewed by respected doctors, neuroscientists, and connective tissue researchers—including Ben Domb, M.D.; Tom Myers; Gil Hedley, Ph.D.; Robert Schleip, Ph.D.; and Jean-Pierre Barral, D.O.—and is used in fitness, sports, wellness, rehabilitation, and hospital
settings.
